Information

The Boeing 777, also known as the Triple Seven, is a long-range, wide-body airliner manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. It holds the title of the world’s largest twinjet and the most-produced wide-body airliner. Designed to fill the gap between Boeing’s smaller twin-engine 767 and larger quad-engine 747, the 777 was developed to replace older trijet models like the DC-10 and L-1011. The program began in 1990 with an order from United Airlines, and the first prototype was unveiled in 1994, making its maiden flight later that year. The 777 entered service in 1995 with United Airlines, and in 2000, longer-range variants were introduced, with the first deliveries occurring in 2004.

The 777 can be configured with a 10-abreast seating layout and typically accommodates 301 to 368 passengers in a three-class configuration. It has an impressive range of between 5,240 and 8,555 nautical miles (9,700 to 15,840 km). Recognizable by its large turbofan engines, raked wingtips, and circular fuselage, the 777 was also the first Boeing airliner to feature fly-by-wire controls and use carbon composite materials in its tailplanes.

The original 777 lineup included the 777-200, followed by the extended-range 777-200ER in 1997 and the longer 777-300 in 1998. These early models, known as the "777 Classics," were powered by engines like the GE90, PW4000, and Trent 800, producing between 77,200 and 98,000 lbf of thrust. The next generation, including the 777-300ER (2004), 777-200LR (2006), and 777F freighter (2009), came with extended raked wingtips and more powerful GE90 engines (110,000 to 115,300 lbf). In 2013, Boeing announced the 777X, which will feature folding composite wings and GE9X engines, with deliveries expected to start in 2026.

Emirates has been the largest operator of the 777, with a fleet of 163 aircraft as of 2018. By March 2025, Boeing had received orders for 2,352 777s from over 60 customers, with 1,748 already delivered. The 777-300ER is the best-selling variant, with 833 units delivered. Initially, the 777 competed with the Airbus A340 and MD-11, but since 2015, its main rival has been the Airbus A350. The first-generation 777-200 is being gradually replaced by Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner.

As of May 2024, the 777 has been involved in 31 aviation accidents and incidents, including five hull losses resulting in 542 fatalities, along with three ground casualties.
